The Sound of Music

I loved this movie when I was a kid. So I was pretty amazed when I heard Gwen remix “The Lonely Goatherd”, a yodeling song with marionettes, into “Wind it up”, something actually danceable and upbeat. On top of that, the video was a great homage to the movie. It was no coincidence that her clothing line followed the same influences as that video.

These two concepts from the Fall 2007 line are a cute mix between Mario and the Barron Von Trapp. You can see the jumper is similar to the one Maria wears while the shirt/tie combo is very masculine. Add on the hat like they did in the World War II era plus the big coat that reminds me of European soldiers.

Here are more masculine military influences from the Spring 2008 show. Note the hat and how similar it is to one of the Nazi soldiers from the movie:

The Sound of Music is one of Gwen’s favorite movies, which is probably why she added these capes into her Fall 2005 line:

Gwen’s “Wind It Up” video had tons of references to Sound of Music – the children’s uniforms, how she makes clothes out of the curtains, the Favorite Things scene… Here is one example of how she had her Harajuku Girls entourage dressed as the “children” while Gwen dons the Maria apron-style jumper dress:
